Discover how «interpersonal Skills LAB», originally developed for pilots and astronauts, also helps project managers and teams to train interpersonal skills in a short time. Using a case study with video sequences, you will see how communication and leadership skills – and therefore project success – can be optimized.
Background
When a project goes wrong, it is usually not only due to technical obstacles, but also to communication and other interpersonal factors.
HROs (High Reliability Organizations, e.g. aviation, aerospace, fire departments,…) have had special training programs for interpersonal skills for decades and have thus very successfully increased safety.
But what about the training of interpersonal skills for project managers and project teams?
The study «Erfolgsfaktoren im Projektmanagement (Success factors in project management)» by BPM-Labor der Hochschule Koblenz, Heupel Consultants and GPM Deutsche Gesellschaft für Projektmanagement e.V., May 2015 lists the following among the most important success factors:
– Communication: Transparent information on the project objective and status
– Standards & communication rules
– Clear definition of roles and clarification of competencies
– Leadership: Project manager as a key factor
– Retrospectives (debriefings)
– Practiced error culture
Systematic training of skills in the areas of these factors is therefore very promising for making projects smoother and saving costs and resources.
Content
Based on a case study at an IT security consulting company, this presentation will introduce you to a simulation-based tool that is used to train project managers, project team members and key stakeholders: «interpersonal Skills LAB» was originally developed for the human factors training of pilots, astronauts and emergency services. The methodology has been successfully translated for use in project management training – because projects also offer complex environments characterized by time pressure, information overload, dynamics and communication between different specialist areas, companies, cultures, etc.
Sequence
Compilation of your individual challenges (whiteboard) in projects;
Presentation of the simulation of «interpersonal Skills LAB» (slides, video);
Demonstration of how your challenges can be addressed by the training;
Training methodology and lesson plan based on a case study (videos);
Change impact after a full day training sequence;
Discussion;
